5 reasons why I love bureaucracy

  1. It enforces discipline.
If a checklist has one hundred boxes, it is one hundred boxes you need to tick.
    No shortcuts!
  2. It allows cheap labour.
You don’t need brilliant or experienced workers to follow a bureaucratic procedure.
    Cost saving!
  3. It imitates intense activity (IIA). You can keep an endless number of people busy. You will have comprehensive evidence of produced “work”. People feel insecure if they don’t have anything to do or say. Having bureaucracy will make people feel busy and useful. Especially those from item 2.
    Make people feel good!
  4. It allows cheap security. Instead of implementing hard technical measures, you can just ask people to sign a written promise to behave.
    Secure!
  5. It protects you from auditors, lawyers and regulators. Just shower them in rivers of papers, memos and emails, and hopefully, they will go away.
    Backside covered!
